RISKSAFE - Risk prevention, risk management, freedom and flexibillity for older people and caregivers

The European population is ageing fast. The number of older people in the European Union (EU) is projected to follow an upward path, peaking at 149.2 million inhabitants (28,5 % of the total population) in 2050.

Amongst the top policy priorities in EU is the promotion of active ageing and ageing in place, in other words the opportunity for older people to remain active and socially productive living in their home environment. Respectively, many older people prefer living at home for as long as possible despite any increasing frailty and complex needs, that is “ageing in place”— a situation that is similar across many countries. For the vast majority of older people, their home is experienced as the protector of their privacy and identity, a place that provides a feeling of strength, independence, responsibility and usefulness.

Old age due to inevitable functional decline is associated with various types of risks, which often results in chronic and complex health and social care needs. Especially older people living in the unregulated home care environment, are exposed to various physical, mental and social risks connected to ageing and the individual and social perceptions of it.

RISKSAFE project’s general objective is to raise the awareness on, and promote risk assessment and risk management in community (older people living in their homes).

Specific objectives:  to develop a well-structured, comprehensive, and open e-learning platform aiming to inform, educate and train older people themselves, and persons serving as informal caregivers.

Project’s target groups are older people living in their homes, informal caregivers, care workers in health/ social care organizations, and adult educational organizations.
